Cephalexin Powder

Cephalexin powder is first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic typically reconstituted with water to form an oral suspension. Used to treat furunculosis, cellulitis, and urinary tract infections in dogs, cats, cows, and poultry. A WVA Veterinary Medicine.

Cephalexin powder is indicated for a wide range of bacterial infections in dogs, cats, poultry, and large animals (e.g., cows, buffaloes, goats).

INDICATIONS

  • Skin and soft tissue infections: Approved use in dogs and a common off-label use in cats, especially for pyoderma and infected wounds.
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs): Used to treat lower UTIs in dogs and cats.
  • Respiratory tract infections: Used for conditions like pneumonia and bronchitis in various animals.
  • Ear infections: Used to treat otitis media caused by susceptible bacteria.
  • Bone infections.
  • Reproductive tract infections: In large animals, it may be administered intrauterinely (after mixing with distilled water) to treat metritis and endometritis.
  • Poultry: The powder can be mixed into drinking water to prevent early chick mortality and treat various fowl diseases. 

ADMINISTRATION

  • Reconstitution: For an oral suspension, a specific amount of water is added to the powder and shaken well to create a liquid. The mixed suspension must be refrigerated and is typically only stable for 14 days.
  • Oral Administration: The liquid suspension can be given directly into the animal’s mouth using a dosing syringe or mixed with a small amount of food to help prevent stomach upset.
  • Intrauterine Administration (Large Animals): The powder is mixed with distilled water or metronidazole solution and administered directly into the uterus using a proper sterile technique.
  • Duration: It is crucial to complete the entire course of antibiotic
