Isometamidium Injection

Isometamidium is used in livestock, particularly cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and camels, for the treatment and prevention of trypanosomiasis caused by various Trypanosoma species.  A CODEX and WVA Veterinary Medicine.

Isometamidium is indicated for the treatment and prevention of animal trypanosomiasis in livestock and companion animals.

INDICATIONS

Effective against a range of Trypanosoma species, including T. vivax, T. congolense, T. brucei, and T. evansi. 

  • Curative Treatment: It is used to treat existing clinical cases of trypanosomiasis at lower dosage rates.
  • Preventive (Prophylactic) Treatment: At higher dosage rates, it can prevent infection, offering protection for a period of 2 to 4 months, depending on the level of fly challenge in the region. 

ADMINISTRATION

  • Reconstitution: The powder for injection must be dissolved in sterile water for injection to achieve the correct concentration, typically a 1% or 2% solution.
  • Injection Site:
    • Large Animals (Cattle, Horses): The injection is given deep into the muscle of the middle third of the neck.
    • Sheep and Goats: The deep muscle of the thigh is used.
  • Dosage Volume: Doses exceeding 10 ml in cattle or 15 ml in sheep/goats should be divided into smaller amounts and injected into multiple, different sites.
  • Intravenous Use: When administered intravenously (primarily in camels), it must be done very slowly as a 1% aqueous solution to avoid acute cardiovascular collapse and other toxic side effects. 
  • It should never be administered subcutaneously, as it is an irritant and can cause local tissue damage.
  • If clinical cases appear in a group of animals, the entire group should be treated.
