Colistin (Polymyxin E) powder is indicated for the treatment and metaphylaxis of enteric (intestinal) infections caused by susceptible Gram-negative bacteria.
INDICATIONS
- Gastrointestinal Diseases: The main indication across various livestock species, including the treatment of post-weaning diarrhea (PWD) in piglets and colibacillosis in poultry. The oral route is favored because colistin is poorly absorbed from the gut, resulting in high concentrations at the site of infection and low systemic exposure.
- E. coli and Salmonella Infections: Used to treat diseases caused by susceptible strains of these Gram-negative bacteria.
- Septicemia (less common): In some cases, it has been used to treat septicaemia, particularly in poultry, though this is less common and its efficacy for systemic infections when given orally is limited due to poor absorption.
ADMINISTRATION
The powder can be dissolved in the animals’ drinking water or milk for mass treatment of a group of animals (flock/herd).
Target Animals:
- Calves (milk-fed)
- Pigs
- Rabbits
- Poultry (chickens, turkeys)
Dosage :
The general recommended dose is 5 mg of colistin sulfate per kg of body weight per day (equivalent to 95,000 IU/kg BW). The duration of treatment is typically for 3 to 7 days, administered in one or two doses daily. Specific dosages can vary by product concentration and the target species.
