TrichGuard Vaccine

Boehringer's TrichGuard is a cattle vaccine used to protect herds from the venereal disease trichomonosis, caused by Tritrichomonas foetus. A WVA Veterinary Medicine.

Boehringer’s TrichGuard vaccine is indicated for bovine venereal trichomoniasis caused by the protozoan parasite Tritrichomonas foetus.

INDICATIONS

  • Reduction of Economic Loss: The vaccine is indicated to reduce losses associated with T. foetus infections, such as infertility, early embryonic death, and low pregnancy rates.
  • Management of Infected Herds: In herds where trichomoniasis is already present, vaccination helps cows and heifers clear the infection more rapidly.
  • Reduction of Organism Shedding: It is indicated to help reduce the shedding of T. foetus organisms, thereby limiting the spread of infection among the herd.
  • Prevention of Fetal Loss: Vaccination aims to eliminate the infection from the reproductive tract before significant fetal loss occurs.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Primary Vaccination: A 2 mL or 5 mL dose is injected subcutaneously into the neck or behind the shoulder.
  • Booster Dose: A second dose must be administered 2 to 4 weeks after the initial injection.
  • Timing: The final injection of the series should be completed at least 4 weeks before the breeding season to ensure peak immunity.
  • Annual Revaccination: Annual boosters are recommended, ideally 4 weeks prior to breeding, to maintain protection levels.
  • Aseptic Technique: Use clean, sterile needles and syringes to prevent site infections.
  • Mixing: The vaccine must be mixed well before use and the entire contents should be used immediately after opening.
