Boehringer TrichGuard is a cattle vaccine used to protect herds from the venereal disease, trichomonosis, caused by Tritrichomonas foetus. It works by reducing the shedding of the organism, which helps protect against the disease’s spread from bulls to cows. This reduces the risk of late-term abortions and infertility, leading to a reduction in open cows.
How it works
- Protects against disease transmission: TrichGuard is the first licensed vaccine to reduce the shedding of Tritrichomonas foetus, making it harder for infected bulls to spread the disease to cows during breeding season.
- Reduces fertility issues: By helping prevent infection, the vaccine helps protect cows from late-term abortions and infertility, reducing the number of open cows.
- Administered before breeding season: It is recommended to administer the vaccine to both beef and dairy cattle and calves before the breeding season begins.
- Part of a comprehensive plan: It can be used as part of a vaccination program to manage the economic impact of trichomoniasis in a herd.
ADMINISTRATION
- Inject a 2-ml dose subcutaneously in the neck.
- Administer a second dose 2 to 4 weeks later.
- The last injection should be given 4 weeks before the breeding season.
- Revaccinate annually.
- Do not slaughter cattle for human consumption within 60 days of treatment.
