Penicillin V (phenoxymethylpenicillin) is an antibiotic used to treat mild-to-moderate streptococcal bacterial infections in dogs and cats. Effective against gram-positive strains of bacteria such as Streptococcus, Staphylococcus (non-penicillinase-producing strains), and Clostridium species. A WOAH Veterinary Medicine.

Penicillin V (phenoxymethylpenicillin) tablets are an oral antibiotic used in dogs and cats for mild to moderate infections.

INDICATIONS

  • Respiratory Tract Infections: Including upper respiratory infections and certain types of pneumonia.
  • Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Such as abscesses, cellulitis, infected wounds, and mild erysipelas.
  • Oral and Dental Infections: Including gum infections and oropharyngeal infections (e.g., Vincent’s gingivitis).
  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Sometimes used for bacterial infections of the bladder or urinary tract in cats.
  • Ear Infections: Targeted at bacterial strains susceptible to narrow-spectrum penicillins. 

ADMINISTRATION

  • Oral Administration: The tablets must be swallowed whole; do not chew or break them.
  • Timing: The medication is best absorbed when given on an empty stomach (one or two hours after a meal).
  • Consistency: For the best effect, administer the doses at evenly spaced times throughout the day (e.g., every 6 or 8 hours, as prescribed).
  • Complete the Course: It is critical to complete the full course of antibiotics as directed by the veterinarian, even if the pet’s symptoms disappear, to prevent the infection from returning or developing antibiotic resistance.
  • With Food (If Necessary): If animal experiences nausea or vomiting when taking the medication on an empty stomach, giving it with a small amount of food can help.
