Sulfadimethoxine oral suspension is a sulfonamide antibiotic indicated for a wide variety of bacterial and protozoal infections in dogs and cats.
INDICATIONS
Protozoal Infections
- Coccidiosis: Used to treat intestinal parasites (coccidia) that cause severe diarrhea, especially in puppies and kittens.
2. Respiratory Tract Infections
- Upper Respiratory: Tonsillitis and pharyngitis.
- Lower Respiratory: Bronchitis and pneumonia.
3. Genitourinary Tract Infections
- Urinary Tract: Cystitis (bladder infection) and nephritis (kidney infection).
- Reproductive Tract: Metritis and pyometra (infections of the uterus).
4. Soft Tissue & Skin Infections
- Skin Conditions: Pustular dermatitis and abscesses.
- Injuries: Infected wounds.
- Other: Anal gland infections.
5. Gastrointestinal Infections
- Bacterial Enteritis: Inflammation of the intestine caused by susceptible bacteria.
- Canine Salmonellosis: Specifically for salmonella infections in dogs.
ADMINISTRATION
- Shake Well: Always shake the bottle thoroughly before each use to ensure the active medication is evenly distributed.
- Measure Accurately: Use a proper dosing syringe or medicinal spoon; do not use household teaspoons, which are inaccurate.
- Give by Mouth: Insert the syringe into the “cheek pocket” at the corner of the pet’s mouth and depress the plunger slowly.
- Food Optional: You can give it with or without food. If your pet has a sensitive stomach, giving it with a small meal can help prevent upset.
- Hydration is Critical: Ensure your pet has constant access to fresh water. Sulfonamides can cause crystal formation in the urine if the animal becomes dehydrated.
