Maduramycin, a polyether ionophore antibiotic feed premix, is an anticoccidial (anti-parasitic) used in chickens and turkeys to prevent coccidiosis.
INDICATIONS
- Prevention of Coccidiosis: Its main role is prophylactic, preventing outbreaks in commercial poultry.
- Target Species: Broiler chickens (meat birds) and turkeys (some strains).
- Effective Against: Multiple Eimeria species, including tenella, acervulina, maxima, brunetti, necatrix, and mivati.
- Mechanism: Acts as an ionophore, disrupting sodium and potassium ion balance in the parasite, leading to swelling and death.
- Not for Layers/Breeders: Should never be used in birds intended for egg production or breeding.
ADMINISTRATION
- Mixed into Feed: The premix is designed to be thoroughly mixed into complete poultry feed, as maduramicin does not easily dissolve in water. This method, known as group dosing, helps ensure uniform distribution of the medication.
- Dosage: The typical approved concentration is very low, usually ranging from 5 to 7 ppm (parts per million), or about 4.54 to 6.36 grams per ton of feed. This narrow effective dose range is close to the toxic dose, so accurate measurement and thorough mixing are crucial to avoid poisoning.
- Target Animals: It is primarily used in broilers (chickens for fattening) and young turkeys from day one of age up to 16 weeks.
- Timing: The drug works effectively during the early developmental period of the Eimeria coccidia species, 1 to 2 days after the chicken is infected.
- Withdrawal Period: A mandatory withdrawal period of at least five days is required before the birds are slaughtered for human consumption. This ensures that drug residues are below food safety limits.
