PMSG-Intervet Solution for Injection

PMSG-Intervet is a hormone extracted from the blood of pregnant mares, which is used then to stimulate reproductive cycles in other animals. Useful for inducing estrus, synchronizing ovulation, and improving fertility in pigs, cattle, and goats.

PMSG injections are indicated in veterinary medicine for stimulating ovarian function, and inducing estrus in non-cycling animals

INDICATIONS in Females

  • Induction and Synchronization of Estrus: Used to bring female animals into heat simultaneously to facilitate artificial insemination and management efficiency in pigs (sows and gilts), cattle, sheep, and goats.
  • Superovulation: Stimulates the development of multiple follicles to increase the number of eggs produced. This is a critical step in embryo transfer programs in cattle and sheep.
  • Treatment of Anestrus: Indicated for animals failing to show a normal estrous cycle, such as non-cycling cows, heifers, or weaned sows experiencing a delayed return to heat.
  • Increase in Prolificacy: Administered to small ruminants (sheep and goats) to increase litter size by promoting multiple ovulations.
  • Induction of Puberty: Used in prepuberal gilts (pigs) and other livestock to trigger the onset of sexual maturity.
  • Receptivity Optimization: In species like rabbits and minks, it is used to improve reproductive performance and receptivity.
Indications in Males
  • Spermatogenesis Stimulation: Occasionally used to treat impaired sperm production in bulls, stallions, boars, rams, and dogs, though its efficacy in these cases is often reported as low.
Indications by Species
  • Cattle: Induction/synchronization of ovulation and superovulation for embryo transfer.
  • Pigs: Induction of fertile estrus in prepuberal gilts and weaned sows; reducing weaning-to-estrus intervals.
  • Sheep & Goats: Synchronization of heat outside the normal breeding season and increasing lambing rates.
  • Dogs & Cats: Induction of estrus in subnormal or non-receptive animals.
  • Laboratory Animals: Widely used in mice and rats for superovulation and research into cell differentiation.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Reconstitution: PMSG is typically supplied as a freeze-dried powder (lyophilisate) and must be reconstituted immediately before use.
  • Preparation: Use a sterile needle and syringe for preparation and administration. Do not use chemical sterilization.
  • Administration: The injection is given deep into a muscle for IM administration, or just under the skin for SC administration.
  • Disposal: The solution should be used immediately after preparation, and any unused portion, along with the vials and needles.
  • Cattle: PMSG can be administered via intramuscular or subcutaneous injection, often in the neck area (a preferred site for injections).
  • Sheep and Goats: In ewes and does, it is typically given by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection at the time of progestagen sponge removal.
  • Pigs (Sows): Administration is generally intramuscular (e.g., behind the base of the ear) or subcutaneous.
  • Dogs (Bitches): PMSG is generally given by subcutaneous injection.
