ADMINISTRATION
Benzylpenicillin (Penicillin G): This is a poorly soluble salt often combined with a local anesthetic (procaine) to reduce pain at the injection site.
- It forms a “depot” in the muscle tissue and slowly releases the active antibiotic over an extended period (12-24 hours).
- It is administered by deep intramuscular (IM) injection only.
- Crucially, it must never be injected intravenously (IV), as this can lead to toxicity or other severe adverse reactions due to the procaine component.
