Bovilis BVD Vaccine against Bovine Viral Diarrhea

MSD Bovilis BVD is an inactivated BVD vaccine for cows and heifers used to protect the foetus against transplacental infection with bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV). Triggers an immune response, preventing the virus from causing severe disease, and protecting the fetus from infection during pregnancy. Breaks the cycle of BVD by preventing the birth of persistently infected calves.

Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) vaccine is indicated for healthy cattle to prevent respiratory illness, reproductive issues, and viremia, targeting BVD Types 1 & 2.

INDICATIONS

  • Respiratory Disease: Protects against clinical signs like coughing, fever, and nasal discharge, often in combination with Pasteurella vaccines.
  • Reproductive Protection: Prevents infection of the fetus, reducing abortions and the birth of Persistently Infected (PI) calves that spread the virus.
  • Viremia Reduction: Stops the virus from circulating in the blood of infected animals.
  • Fetal Protection: A major goal for breeding animals, with some modified-live (MLV) vaccines offering high levels of protection against fetal infection

FUNCTIONS

  • Induces an immune response: Contains a weakened or inactivated form of the Bovine Viral Diarrhea virus (BVDV), which stimulates the cow’s immune system to produce antibodies against the virus without causing the disease.
  • Protects the fetus: In pregnant cows, these antibodies cross the placenta, providing crucial protection for the unborn calf from becoming infected with BVDV.
  • Prevents persistent infections: By preventing the fetus from being infected, the vaccine prevents the birth of “persistently infected” (PI) calves, which are a major source of the virus in a herd.
  • Reduces virus transmission: Vaccinated animals show a reduction in virus shedding, which lowers the overall BVD virus pressure on the farm and reduces the risk of infection for other herd members.
  • Reduces disease severity: The vaccine also helps to reduce the severity of transient BVD infections in the vaccinated animals.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Initial series: A primary vaccination course involves two doses given by intramuscular injection four weeks apart, ideally completed a month before the breeding season.
  • Booster: A single booster shot is required before each subsequent breeding season, ideally 4 weeks before the start of pregnancy.
  • Herd-wide application: The program can be applied to all cattle in the herd to achieve herd-wide immunity and drastically reduce transmission.
