Calcium Borogluconate Injection

Calcium Borogluconate is used to treat and prevent conditions caused by low calcium levels (hypocalcemia) in dairy cows, Hypocalcemic conditions in other livestock, and Eclampsia in dogs. Can be used to manage symptoms like muscle twitching, spasms, stiffness, weakness, incoordination, and seizures associated with hypocalcemia.

Calcium Borogluconate injection is indicated for the treatment and prevention of hypocalcemia, and milk fever in cattle.

INDICATIONS

  • Milk Fever (Parturient Paresis): This is its most common use, especially in dairy cows and ewes around the time of calving or lambing, when a sudden drop in blood calcium levels can be life-threatening.
  • Eclampsia: It is used to treat this condition, which is a form of hypocalcemia that can occur in pregnant or lactating dogs and cats.
  • Other Conditions: It addresses symptoms of calcium deficiency like muscle twitching, spasms, stiffness, weakness, incoordination, and seizures in livestock and horses.
  • Adjunct Therapy: It can be used as an antidote for magnesium poisoning, lead poisoning, or acute fluoride poisoning, and as an aid in managing certain inflammatory or allergic reactions.
  • Mineral Deficiencies: Formulations sometimes include other minerals like phosphorus, magnesium, and potassium to treat combined deficiencies (e.g., in CMPK injections).

ADMINISTRATION

  • Intravenous (IV) Injection: This method is recommended for acute, severe conditions (e.g., a cow that is down with milk fever) because it rapidly raises blood calcium levels. The solution must be warmed to body temperature and injected slowly with careful monitoring of the heart rate to avoid cardiac complications.
  • Subcutaneous (SC) Injection: This route is often used for less acute cases or for prevention (prophylaxis). When injecting subcutaneously, the dose should be divided among several injection sites (e.g., the neck area in cattle) and massaged to facilitate absorption and minimize tissue irritation.
  • Intraperitoneal Injection: In some specific cases for cattle, this route may also be used.
  • Oral Administration: Injections are for acute conditions; oral calcium supplements may be used for ongoing management or prevention of relapse after the initial injection treatment.
