Ely Lilly Keflin injection (cefalotin) is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections in dogs, cats, horses, and livestock.
INDICATIONS
- Skin and soft tissue infections, such as pyoderma and infected wounds.
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs) and bladder infections.
- Respiratory tract infections, including pneumonia.
- Bone and joint infections (osteomyelitis).
- Surgical prophylaxis, given before, during, or after surgery to prevent possible infections.
- Systemic infections, such as septicemia (blood poisoning) or peritonitis
ADMINISTRATION
Keflin is typically provided as a powder that must be reconstituted with a sterile liquid (like saline) before use. It is administered in the following ways:
- Intravenous (IV) Injection: This is the most common method, often delivered as a slow infusion over approximately 30 minutes in a hospital setting.
- Intramuscular (IM) Injection: It can be injected directly into a large muscle.
- Continuous Infusion: In some severe cases, it may be given as a constant IV drip to maintain steady levels in the bloodstream.
