Cefamax Intramammary Ointment

Laboratorios Syva Cefamax is a broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic used primarily to treat bacterial infections in cattle. It is a dry cow treatment, administered as an intramammary ointment to treat or prevent mastitis during the "dry period" when the cow is not producing milk.

Cefamax is indicated for the treatment and prevention of mastitis in cows.

INDICATIONS

  • Dry Cow Treatment: It is used at the start of the dry period to treat subclinical mammitis and prevent new infections. It is effective against major pathogens including Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus dysgalactiae, and Streptococcus uberis.
  • Lactating Cows: Similar formulations (often marketed under related names like Cefa-Lak) are used to treat mastitis during the lactation period when clinical signs first appear.

ADMINISTRATION

  • The medication is delivered via an intramammary syringe directly into each infected quarter.
  • Intramammary Administration (Cattle)
Cefamax is most commonly administered as an intramammary ointment to treat or prevent mastitis in “dry cows” (cows at the end of their lactation period).
    • Method: One syringe is infused into each quarter of the udder.
    • Timing: Administered at the start of the dry period.
    • Withdrawal Period: Meat must be withheld for 14 days. Milk withdrawal is zero days if the dry period lasts more than 5 weeks; otherwise, a 24-hour (2 milkings) withdrawal is required after calving.
