Cefazolin Injection

Apotex Cefazolin is a broad-spectrum, cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, and for surgical prophylaxis in dogs, cats, and horses. A WOAH Veterinary Medicine.

Apotex Cefazolin is indicated for treating serious bacterial infections, and for surgical prophylaxis in dogs, cats, and horses.

INDICATIONS

  • Perioperative Prophylaxis: Used to prevent surgical site infections, commonly in orthopedic, cardiac, and general surgeries.
  • Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Treatment of infections such as pyoderma and abscesses.
  • Respiratory Tract Infections: Treatment of bacterial pneumonia or lower respiratory infections.
  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections.
  • Bone and Joint Infections: Treatment of osteomyelitis or septic arthritis.
  • Septicemia/Endocarditis: Used in severe, susceptible systemic

ADMINISTRATION

  • Intravenous (IV): Administered directly into a vein or through an IV line, usually slowly to prevent vomiting.
  • Intramuscular (IM): Injected into deep muscle tissue, such as the caudal thigh muscles (rear leg).
  • Subcutaneous (SC): Occasionally given under the skin.
Key Guidelines
  • Reconstitution: The powder form must be mixed with sterile water, bacteriostatic water, or sodium chloride injection.
  • Dosage: Common dosages range from 5 to 15 mg per pound (10 to 30 mg/kg).
  • Perioperative Use: For surgery, it is typically given IV 30-60 minutes before the incision.
