Alivira Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections in dogs, cats, and horses.

INDICATIONS

  • Central Nervous System Infections: Meningitis, encephalitis, and other brain infections due to excellent penetration.
  • Eye Infections: Good for ocular infections where it reaches therapeutic levels.
  • Walled-Off/Necrotic Infections: Effective in abscesses, pneumonia, or prostate infections where other drugs struggle.
  • Tick-Borne Diseases: Treatment for Rickettsia.
  • Resistant Bacteria: Used for MRSA/MRSP and multidrug-resistant organisms.
  • Specific Bacteria: Targets Salmonella, Bordetella, E. coli, Staphylococci, Chlamydia, and Mycoplasma.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Intravenous (IV): This method is often recommended for the sodium succinate form of Chloramphenicol, frequently prepared as a 10% solution (100mg/mL). It is typically administered slowly over a minute or more.
  • Intramuscular (IM): The injection can be given into large muscle groups, such as the caudal thigh muscles. Before injecting slowly, it is important to aspirate (pull back the plunger slightly) to check for the presence of blood.

Key Steps & Precautions

  • Preparation: The calculated dose should be drawn up, and any air bubbles removed from the syringe.
  • Restraint: Ensuring the animal is properly restrained by an assistant is important for safe administration.
  • Injection Site: Select appropriate large muscle for IM injection, or areas with loose skin for SC injections.
  • Aspiration: For IM and SC injections, the plunger is pulled back slightly to confirm that a blood vessel has not been hit.
  • Slow Delivery: Injecting the solution slowly helps to minimize discomfort and potential tissue damage.
  • Aftercare: For subcutaneous injections, gently rubbing the site after injection can help disperse the medication.
