- Liver flukes: Adult and immature stages of Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica.
- Paramphistomum spp. (rumen flukes) in sheep.
Nematodes (Roundworms)
Closantel is particularly effective against blood-sucking gastrointestinal roundworms such as:
- Haemonchus spp. (Haemonchus contortus and Haemonchus placei)
- Bunostomum phlebotomum (hookworms)
- Oesophagostomum radiatum
- Strongyloides papillosus
- Chabertia ovina (large-mouthed bowel worm) in sheep.
Arthropods (External Parasites and Grubs)
- Warbles: Larval stages of Hypoderma bovis in cattle.
- Sheep nasal bot fly: Oestrus ovis.
- Other ectoparasites: Ticks, lice, and certain mange mites.
ADMINISTRATION
The bolus is a large, solid tablet designed for oral administration, typically using a specialized tool called a bolus gun or balling gun. This method ensures the animal receives the full, accurate dose by placing the bolus at the back of its mouth to be swallowed.
- For large animals like cattle, the bolus gun is inserted past the hump of the tongue, and the trigger is squeezed to deposit the bolus, ensuring the animal swallows it and does not spit it out.
- For sheep and goats, a smaller bolus or a fraction of a larger bolus may be used, following species-specific instructions.
