Colistin Soluble Powder

Colistin is an oral antibiotic used to treat gastrointestinal infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria in calves, lambs, pigs, chickens and turkeys, to kill natural bacteria present in the stomach before surgery. Formulated to be dissolved in drinking water or milk replacer, and administered orally. An FAO/WHO Veterinary Medicine.

Colistin soluble powder is indicated for the treatment of gastrointestinal (enteric) infections caused by specific colistin-sensitive Gram-negative bacteria.

INDICATIONS

  • Calves, Lambs, and Piglets (Pre-ruminant only): Treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, enteritis, and other enteric infections caused by susceptible organisms.
  • Swine (Pigs): Primarily used for controlling gastrointestinal infections and post-weaning diarrhea caused by E. coli and Salmonella.
  • Poultry (Chickens and Turkeys): Indicated for enteritis, fowl typhoid, pullorum disease, and colibacillosis caused by susceptible bacteria like E. coli, Salmonella, and Klebsiella.

ADMINISTRATION

  1. Preparation: The prescribed quantity of powder is mixed with a specific volume of clean, fresh water or milk replacer. The powder is highly soluble in water.
  2. Administration: The medicated water/milk is provided as the sole source of drinking fluid for the animals during the treatment period. This ensures that all affected animals receive the medication.
  3. Dosage and Duration: Dosage and treatment duration (typically 3 to 5 days) vary by the animal species, body weight, and severity of the infection, and should be strictly followed under the guidance of a veterinarian.
  4. Monitoring: Water consumption should be monitored to guarantee animals receive the correct dosage.
