Fenbendazole Bolus

Fenbendazole bolus are indicated for the control of gastrointestinal and respiratory parasites in cattle, sheep, goats & horses. Normally administered orally using a specialized applicator or balling gun.

Fenbendazole bolus are indicated for the control of parasitic worms in cattle, sheep, goats and horses.

INDICATIONS

  • Roundworms (Ascarids): Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina, Ascaridia galli, Neoascaris vitulorum.
  • Hookworms: Ancylostoma caninum, Uncinaria stenocephala, Bunostomum phlebotomum.
  • Whipworms: Trichuris vulpis.
  • Tapeworms: Effective against Taenia species but not typically against the common flea-borne tapeworm (Dipylidium caninum).
  • Lungworms: Dictyocaulus viviparus (in cattle) and Dictyocaulus filaria (in sheep/goats), Aelurostrongylus abstrusus (in cats), and Filaroides spp..
  • Stomach Worms: Haemonchus spp., Ostertagia spp., Trichostrongylus spp..
  • Other Parasites (Extra-label use in small animals): Commonly used “off-label” to treat Giardia. 

ADMINISTRATION

The bolus is administered orally using a specialized applicator or balling gun to ensure it is swallowed correctly.
  • Restraint: The animal should be properly restrained.
  • Insertion: The applicator is inserted into the front of the mouth and gently pushed over the back of the tongue.
  • Swallowing: The animal’s head is tilted upward, and the bolus is released once the animal begins to swallow, which allows for safe passage into the esophagus.
  • Confirmation: The animal should be observed briefly to confirm swallowing.

DOSAGE

  • Cattle, Buffaloes, Goats, Sheep: Typically around 5 mg per kg of body weight as a single dose (1.5 gm bolus for a 300 kg animal).
  • Horses: Generally 7.5 mg per kg of body weight as a single dose.
  • Continuous-Release Bolus: Some formulations are continuous-release intraruminal devices administered once to provide control throughout the grazing season (up to 140 days) for cattle weighing between 100 kg and 300 kg.
