Footrot Vaccine

Footrot vaccine is indicated in the prevention or reduction of footrot in cattle and sheep.
INDICATIONS
CATTLE
- Age: Indicated for cattle 6 months of age or older.
- Disease Prevention: Helps prevent the acute lameness, interdigital swelling, and pain associated with the disease.
- Production: Vaccination helps prevent the economic losses associated with reduced weight gain and decreased milk production caused by footrot.
- Other Uses: Some F. necrophorum bacterin vaccines (e.g., Fusogard) are also approved as an aid in the reduction of liver abscesses in cattle.
- Timing: Vaccination is often recommended before the onset of wet, muddy conditions that promote the spread of the bacteria.
SHEEP & GOATS
- Disease Prevention and Treatment: Vaccines can help prevent new infections and accelerate the healing process in already affected sheep.
- Flock Management: They are an important tool in flock management, particularly in challenging situations like on extensive properties where regular foot bathing is difficult.
- Strain Specificity: The effectiveness of sheep vaccines depends on matching the vaccine’s D. nodosus serogroups to the specific strains present in the infected flock.
- Timing: Vaccination should begin before the start of the wet season, with a booster following several weeks later.
ADMINISTRATION
- Warm the Vaccine: Since it contains an oil adjuvant, gently warm the bottle in warm (not hot) water for a few minutes to help with flow, especially in cold weather.
- Shake Well: Thoroughly shake the bottle before drawing up the dose.
- Choose the Site: Inject into the loose skin on the side of the neck, 2-3 inches behind the ear, to avoid muscle and nerve tissue.
- Use Proper Technique: Lift a fold of skin and insert the needle through the skin (subcutaneously), not into the muscle.
- Maintain Sterility: Use sterile equipment and inject through clean, dry skin to prevent abscesses, which are a common reaction to these vaccines.
- Watch for Reactions: Swelling or small abscesses at the injection site can occur, but contact your vet if they are severe or persistent.
