Metronidazole tablets are an antibacterial and antiprotozoal medication indicated for the treatment of infections in dogs, cats, and horses.
INDICATIONS
- Gastrointestinal Disorders: Commonly prescribed for acute or chronic diarrhea, particularly when of large-intestinal origin (colitis).
- Protozoal Infections: Used to treat infections from single-celled parasites such as:
- Giardia (a common cause of intestinal upset).
- Trichomonas and Entamoeba.
- Balantidium coli.
- Anaerobic Bacterial Infections: Targets bacteria that thrive in low-oxygen environments, making it effective for treating:
- Abscesses: Internal or deep tissue abscesses with poor circulation.
- Oral & Dental Infections: Penetrates the jaw and bone, useful for gum disease, periodontitis, and gingivitis.
- Genital & Reproductive Tract: Infections in the uterus or other pelvic areas.
- Inflammatory Conditions: Often used for its immunomodulatory properties to manage Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) in cats and dogs.
ADMINISTRATION
- With Food: It is highly recommended to give metronidazole with food to mask its bitterness and reduce the risk of gastrointestinal upset.
- Hide in Treats: Use “pill pockets” or high-value treats like peanut butter (ensure it is xylitol-free), cheese, or canned food to conceal the tablet.
- Direct Administration: If animal refuses, place the tablet at the very back of the throat, gently hold the mouth closed, and stroke the throat to encourage swallowing.
