Miconazole Nitrate Cream is a topical antifungal indicated the treatment of superficial fungal infections in dogs and cats.

INDICATIONS

• Dermatophytosis (Ringworm): This is a primary indication, covering infections caused by common dermatophytes such as Microsporum canis, Microsporum gypseum, and Trichophyton mentagrophytes.
• Malassezia Dermatitis: Miconazole is effective in treating this common yeast infection of the skin in dogs and cats, which causes redness, itching, and scaling.
• Pyoderma: Miconazole also has activity against some Gram-positive bacteria like Staphylococcus intermedius, which can be involved in bacterial skin infections (pyoderma).
• Otitis Externa: When formulated in specific ear medications (often in combination with other drugs), it is used to treat inflammation and infections of the external ear canal caused by yeasts and bacteria.
• Interdigital Cysts: It can be used to treat these fluid-filled sacs that form between the toes of animals, often associated with secondary infections. 

ADMINISTRATION

• Preparation:
  • Clean and Dry: The affected area should be thoroughly cleaned and dried before application.
  • Clip Hair: The hair around and over the infection site should be clipped at the start of treatment to allow the medication to reach the skin effectively.
• Application:
  • Apply a light covering of the cream to cover the affected area with a thin layer.
  • Application is often best accomplished using a gauze pad or cotton swab.
  • Ensure the medication has at least 10 minutes of contact time with the affected area.
  • Take steps to prevent your pet from licking or scratching the treated areas, possibly using an e-collar (Elizabethan collar) or bandage, to ensure the medication stays on and to prevent accidental ingestion.
• Hygiene and Safety:
  • Wash hands thoroughly after administration to avoid spreading the fungal infection to yourself or other animals.
  • Avoid contact with eyes, as irritation may result.
