GUDAIR Vaccine

CZ VACCINES GUDAIR vaccine is used in sheep and goats for the control and prevention of paratuberculosis caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis, an incurable and terminal wasting disease in livestock. A WVA Veterinary Medicine.

CZ VACCINES GUDAIR vaccine is indicated for use in cattle and sheep herds against Johne’s disease (paratuberculosis).

INDICATIONS

  • High Disease Prevalence: The main indication is in herds that are already significantly infected with MAP, making “test and cull” eradication strategies ineffective or economically unfeasible.
  • Limited Resources: Vaccination may be a suitable option for farms that lack the labor, financial resources, or facilities to implement the intensive management changes required for non-vaccination control programs.
  • Disease Management: The vaccine does not prevent infection, but it helps to:
    • Reduce the incidence and severity of clinical signs (e.g., severe diarrhea, weight loss).
    • Extend the productive life of infected animals.
    • Lessen the amount of bacteria shed in feces, thereby reducing environmental contamination and transmission to susceptible young stock.
  • Reduces mortality: Vaccination can reduce deaths from Johne’s disease in infected flocks by up to 90%.
  • Decreases bacterial shedding: It significantly reduces the amount of bacteria an infected animal sheds in its feces, which helps lower environmental contamination and disease transmission to other animals.
  • Provides long-term protection: A single 1 mL dose, typically administered to young animals (lambs and kids) between 4 weeks and 6 months of age, can provide protection for life in most control programs.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Preparation: The vaccine is prepared using a sterile syringe and needle, ensuring no air bubbles are present.
  • Injection Site:
    • Cattle: Commonly the dewlap, about an inch above the brisket, or the side of the neck.
    • Technique: A fold of skin is lifted to form a “tent,” and the needle is inserted into the space under the tent, not deep into the muscle.
  • Placement Check: Before injecting, pull back slightly on the plunger; if no blood or air enters, the placement is correct (subcutaneous).
  • Injection: The vaccine is slowly injected.
  • Identification: Vaccinated animals, especially young calves, require official identification and record-keeping.
  • Timing: Often given to young calves (e.g., 1-35 days old) in a single or prime-boost series.
