Normal Saline

Normal saline is an isotonic crystalloid fluid used for fluid and electrolyte replenishment, and as a diluent for medications.

Fluid Therapy: To rehydrate animals suffering from mild dehydration or loss of fluids, maintaining essential electrolyte balance.

Wound Care: For rinsing and cleaning wounds, cuts, and abrasions to remove debris and reduce the risk of infection.

Nasal Irrigation: To flush nasal passages, helping to clear congestion in pets with allergies or respiratory issues.

Drug Diluent: To dilute other medications for administration, ensuring they are delivered safely and effectively.

Intravenous (IV) injection: This is the primary route for rapid fluid and electrolyte replacement, such as in cases of severe dehydration, hypovolemia (low blood volume), or shock. IV administration allows for precise control over the infusion rate and immediate entry into the bloodstream.
Subcutaneous (SQ) injection: This method involves injecting the fluid under the skin, usually in the loose skin over the shoulder blades or the back. It is commonly used for correcting mild to moderate dehydration or providing ongoing fluid support in a non-emergency setting, such as for pets with chronic kidney disease. The fluid forms a temporary lump that is slowly absorbed by the body over several hours. This method is often taught to pet owners for at-home use.
Intraosseous (IO) injection: This route, where fluids are administered into the bone marrow cavity, is used primarily in emergency situations or in very small animals where IV access is difficult to obtain.
