Praziquantel is indicated for the removal and control of various species of tapeworms (cestodes) in dogs and cats.

INDICATIONS

  • In Dogs:
    • Dipylidium caninum (Common flea tapeworm).
    • Taenia pisiformis.
    • Echinococcus granulosus.
    • Echinococcus multilocularis (for both removal and control).
    • Taenia hydatigena and Mesocestoides corti (specifically in some formulations).
  • In Cats:

ADMINISTRATION

  • Subcutaneous (SQ) Route: The injection is given into the loose skin, often in the area of the shoulder blade or over the ribs behind the elbow for cats. In large dogs, there may be a brief period of pain associated with subcutaneous injection, so the intramuscular route may be preferred.
  • Intramuscular (IM) Route: The injection is given directly into the muscle tissue.
  • Professional Administration: This medication is a prescription drug and its use is restricted to administration by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. It is typically administered in a clinic or hospital setting.
  • Fasting is Not Required: The effectiveness of the praziquantel injection is not affected by the presence of food in the stomach, so fasting is not necessary before the injection.
