Procaine Benzylpenicillin (Penicillin G Procaine) is a long-acting injectable antibiotic indicated for treating local and systemic infections.
INDICATIONS
- Cattle & Calves: Treatment of pneumonia, shipping fever syndrome, foot rot, navel infections, and wound infections.
- Swine (Pigs): Treatment of mastitis, wound infections, and bacterial infections associated with pneumonia. It is also used for Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae infections.
- Horses: Treatment of strangles, shipping fever syndrome, and bacterial infections associated with pneumonia.
- Sheep & Goats: Approved in sheep for various infections, though extralabel use in goats is common with specific veterinary guidance on withdrawal times.
- Dogs & Cats: Used for conditions like otitis externa and bacterial infections linked to pneumonia.
ADMINISTRATION
- Route: It must be administered by deep intramuscular injection only. It should never be administered intravenously, as inadvertent IV injection can cause severe neurological damage or cardiopulmonary arrest.
- Dosage: Dosing varies by species and the severity of the infection, often requiring 6,000 to 18,000 IU per Kg of body weight daily.
- Withdrawal Periods: For food-producing animals, strict withdrawal times for meat and milk must be observed to prevent drug residues in the human food chain. These times can range from 48 hours for milk to several weeks for meat, depending on the dose and specific product label.
- Adverse Effects: While rare, allergic reactions can occur in sensitized animals (and humans handling the drug). Symptoms can include skin rashes, fever, collapse, or difficulty breathing.
