Salmovac Vaccine

Cevac Salmovac is a live vaccine used to immunize chickens against Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) and Salmonella Typhimurium (ST). Works by reducing colonization, persistence, and invasion in the intestinal tract and internal organs. A WVA Veterinary Medicine.

Salmonella Enteritidis vaccine (Salmovac) is indicated for active immunization of chickens to reduce infection, transmission, and contamination of eggs.

INDICATIONS

  • Reduction of Colonization and Invasion: To minimize the presence and multiplication of Salmonella Enteritidis (and sometimes Salmonella Typhimurium) in the intestinal tract and internal organs (liver, spleen, ovaries, caeca).
  • Prevention of Egg Contamination: A crucial indication is the prevention of SE contamination in eggs, which is a primary source of human foodborne infections.
  • Reduction of Faecal Excretion: To decrease the shedding of the bacteria in droppings, thereby limiting the spread of the infection within the flock and the environment.
  • Reduction of Clinical Signs and Mortality: For the active immunization of healthy, susceptible birds to reduce disease signs and death caused by the infection, particularly in young chicks who are highly susceptible.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Delivery: Often mixed with drinking water, sprayed, or given as eye drops.
  • Preparation: Reconstituted with water, sometimes using skimmed milk powder to stabilize.
  • Timing: Water may be withheld for a few hours before vaccination to ensure all birds drink.
  • Dosage: Diluted for consumption within a few hours (e.g., 2L/1000 birds initially, increasing with age).
  • Example Schedule: First dose at day-old, repeated at 6-8 weeks, and potentially again before laying.
