Strangvac Vaccine

Dechra's Strangvac vaccine is used to prevent strangles, a highly contagious respiratory disease in horses caused by the bacterium Streptococcus equi. Helps protect against the clinical signs of strangles, such as fever, coughing, and difficulty swallowing, and significantly reduces the number of lymph node abscesses.

Dechra Strangvac vaccine is indicated for horses at high risk of exposure to the bacterium Streptococcus equi.

INDICATIONS

  • High-Risk Environments: Livery yards, equestrian centers, studs, and premises receiving many new horses.
  • Frequent Travel: Horses attending shows, clinics, or group rides.
  • Young Horses: Weanlings and yearlings are particularly susceptible.
  • Poor Biosecurity: Yards with suboptimal management or frequent interaction with outside horses.
  • Controlling Outbreaks: To reduce infection severity and shedding, minimizing yard-wide risk.

What is does

  • Protects against strangles: Protects against infection from Streptococcus equi, a common cause of strangles in horses.
  • Reduces clinical signs: Lowers the severity of symptoms, including high temperature, coughing, and difficulty swallowing.
  • Decreases abscesses: Helps reduce the formation of lymph node abscesses.
  • Minimizes disease spread: Vaccinated horses shed fewer bacteria, reducing the risk of transmitting the disease to other horses.
  • Has DIVA capability: The vaccine is designed to differentiate between vaccinated and infected animals (DIVA) on diagnostic tests.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Shake Well: Always shake the vial thoroughly before use.
  • Injection Site: Administer intramuscularly (IM), typically in the neck or hindquarters.
  • Dose: One 2 ml dose.
