Sulfadiazine + Trimethoprim oral powder is a potentiated sulfonamide antibiotic used to treat bacterial and protozoal infections in horses, livestock, and poultry.

INDICATIONS

  • Respiratory Tract Infections: This includes conditions like pneumonia, bronchitis, and acute strangles in horses.
  • Urinary and Urogenital Infections: It is used for acute bladder infections (cystitis), prostate infections, nephritis, metritis, and vaginitis.
  • Gastrointestinal Tract Infections: This includes bacterial diarrhea, enteritis, and salmonellosis.
  • Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: The drug can penetrate various body tissues and is effective for treating wound infections, abscesses, and some staph infections of the skin and ear.
  • Parasitic Infections: Used to treat protozoal infections like coccidiosis and toxoplasmosis, particularly in small animals.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Horses: The powder should be mixed into a small quantity of palatable feed, such as mash, immediately prior to dosing.
    • Since the active ingredients can have a bitter taste, adding molasses or another sweetener may encourage the horse to eat the mixture.
    • It is recommended that other feed be withheld until the medicated feed is completely consumed.
    • If a horse refuses the medicated feed, a different pharmaceutical form (e.g., oral paste or suspension) should be used.
  • Calves: The powder can be administered via the milk or milk replacer, or mixed into the drinking water.
    • For medicated milk replacer, the solution should be vigorously stirred for several minutes and consumed immediately.
  • Swine and Poultry: typically dissolved in the drinking water, which should be the sole source of water during the treatment period.
