Sulfamethoxine Oral Solution

Sulfamethoxine is a sulfonamide antibiotic used to treat bacterial and protozoal infections in livestock and pets. Works by inhibiting the synthesis of folic acid in susceptible organisms, which prevents their growth and reproduction. Commonly added to drinking water, or administered as an oral drench. Sulfamethoxine is a sulfonamide antibiotic used to treat various bacterial and protozoal infections in livestock and pets.

INDICATIONS

  • Cattle: Treatment of shipping fever complex (bacterial pneumonia), calf diphtheria, and foot rot.
  • Poultry (Chickens): Treatment of avian colibacillosis, pullorum, fowl typhoid, and infectious rhinitis.
  • Swine (Pigs): Used for treatment of piglet edema, atrophic rhinitis, pleuropneumonia, yellow and white scour (diarrhea), and toxoplasmosis.
  • Sheep and Goats: Used to treat pneumonia and coccidiosis (a parasitic infection), though often as an extra-label (off-label) drug.
  • Dogs and Cats: Potentiated sulfonamides like the combination of sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim are commonly prescribed by veterinarians for urinary tract infections (UTIs), skin infections, and certain parasitic infections,

ADMINISTRATION

  • Oral Administration: This is the most frequent method for small animals like dogs and cats, and can also be used for livestock.
    • Tablets/Bolus: The medication is given by mouth as a pill or large tablet.
    • Liquid Suspension: A liquid form (often flavored for pets) is administered directly into the animal’s mouth using an oral syringe. This can be given with or without food.
    • Drinking Water/Drench: For poultry and cattle, sulfadimethoxine is often provided as a concentrated solution or soluble powder mixed into the drinking water supply to medicate a flock or herd. For individual cattle treatment, the solution may be given as an oral drench.
  • Intravenous (IV) Injection: An injectable solution is available for use only in cattle to treat conditions like shipping fever or foot rot. This is administered directly into the jugular vein by a veterinarian or trained professional following specific sterile procedures to prevent tissue damage.
  • Subcutaneous (SQ) Injection: Sometimes administered under the skin on the first day of treatment, to rapidly achieve therapeutic blood levels.
