ADMINISTRATION

• Subcutaneous (SC): Injected just under the skin. This is the most common route for prophylactic use (prevention) after an injury or before surgery.
• Intramuscular (IM): Injected deep into a muscle, such as the neck or hindquarters. This route is often used for both prophylaxis and treatment.
• Intravenous (IV): Injected directly into the bloodstream. This is usually reserved for therapeutic use (treating active tetanus) to achieve rapid neutralization of toxins, but must be administered very slowly to avoid reactions.
• Intrathecal/Subarachnoid: Injected into the space around the spinal cord. In severe veterinary cases (especially in horses), this specialized route may be used by a veterinarian to deliver the antitoxin directly to the central nervous system.
