Triclabendazole Bolus

Triclabendazole is used to treat and control parasitic iinfections in cattle and sheep including liver flukes (Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica), and acute, subacute, and chronic fascioliasis. An CODEX and WVA Veterinary Medicine.

Triclabendazole bolus are indicated for the treatment and control of liver fluke infections (fascioliasis) in livestock.

INDICATIONS

  • Target Parasites: Triclabendazole is highly effective against all stages of the liver fluke, including early immature, immature, and adult forms. This makes it a crucial tool for both the treatment of acute and chronic infections.
  • Mechanism: As a benzimidazole derivative, it works by binding to the parasite’s beta-tubulin protein, which inhibits microtubule formation and damages the parasite’s cellular transport functions, ultimately killing it.
  • Spectrum: It is a narrow-spectrum dewormer, primarily effective only against flukes, and generally not against roundworms, tapeworms, or external parasites when used alone. It is often combined with other anthelmintics (like Levamisole) to create a broader spectrum treatment for various gastrointestinal and lungworms.
  • Benefits: When used effectively, it helps reduce clinical signs of infection, improves weight gain, and can help maintain normal milk production and fertility in livestock.
  • Safety: It is considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation at recommended dosages, though withdrawal periods for meat and milk must be observed to avoid residues in the food chain.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Direct Oral Administration: Can be administered directly into the animal’s mouth using a bolus gun or applicator.
  • Drench: Can be dissolved in water to create an oral suspension (drench) and administered to the animal using drenching equipment.
  • Mixed with Feed: Can be crushed and mixed with a small amount of palatable feed, such as molasses, or wrapped in a banana leaf, to encourage the animal to eat it voluntarily.
  • Dosage: The correct dosage is critical and is determined by the animal’s body weight and species (e.g., cattle, sheep, goats).
  • Fasting: Fasting before and after administration can enhance the absorption and efficacy of the medication.
  • Water Intake: Ensure the animal has access to adequate water intake after treatment.
