Trimethoprim tablets are a broad-spectrum antibiotic/antimicrobial used to treat various bacterial and protozoal infections in dogs, cats, horses, cattle, and swine. Works by preventing synthesis of essential proteins required by the bacteria to carry out vital functions.
INDICATIONS
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): This is one of the primary uses, effective for bladder and prostate infections.
- Respiratory Infections: It is prescribed for conditions like pneumonia and kennel cough (Bordetella bronchiseptica).
- Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: The drug is effective against staphylococcal infections in the skin, making it a good choice for skin and ear issues.
- Gastrointestinal Infections: It can be used for enteritis and certain types of diarrhea caused by susceptible organisms.
- Protozoal Infections: The combination is effective in treating parasitic infections such as Coccidiosis and Toxoplasmosis.
- Other Infections: It can also penetrate into “sequestered” sites like the prostate gland, the blood-brain barrier, and the eye to treat infections in those locations.
This medication works by inhibiting two consecutive steps in the bacterial synthesis of folic acid, which is essential for bacteria to produce DNA and proteins, thereby preventing them from multiplying and thriving.
