• Fluid Replenishment: It helps restore fluid balance in dehydrated patients.
• Calorie Source: Dextrose provides energy (approximately 170 kcal/L) and can help decrease protein breakdown (protein catabolism).
• Treating Hypoglycemia: It is a primary treatment for animals exhibiting clinical signs of low blood sugar, such as weakness, lethargy, seizures, or ataxia.
• Medication Diluent: It can serve as a diluent for compatible powdered or liquid medications for intravenous administration.
• Inducing Diuresis: Depending on the patient’s condition and volume administered, it can help increase urine production. 

ADMINISTRATION

• Intravenous Use Only: D5W is intended for intravenous administration using sterile equipment.
• Supervision: Dosage and administration depend heavily on the patient’s age, weight, and clinical condition, and must be done under the order of a licensed veterinarian.
• Not for Blood Transfusions: It should never be administered simultaneously with blood products through the same IV line, as it can cause pseudoagglutination or hemolysis of red blood cells.
