Hyoscine Butylbromide Injection

Hyoscine Butylbromide is an antispasmodic and anticholinergic drug used for relief of spasmodic colic, and the facilitation of rectal examination in horses that strain during the procedure. Works by relaxing the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal and urinary tracts

Hyoscine butylbromide is indicated for the treatment of smooth muscle spasms in the gastrointestinal, urinary, and bile excretory tracts of various animal species.

INDICATIONS

  • Horses: Indicated for the reduction of intestinal pain caused by uncomplicated spasmodic colic, flatulent colic, and simple impactions. Administered as a single, slow intravenous (IV) injection. The typical dosage is 0.3 mg per kg of body weight. Its effect provides rapid, short-term relief (lasting about 30 minutes for heart rate changes, and several hours for pain relief) and can also help relax the rectum to facilitate diagnostic palpation.
  • Calves: Used for its antispasmodic effect as an aid in the symptomatic treatment of calf scour (diarrhea), in conjunction with oral re-hydration and other therapies. It is typically administered by intramuscular (IM) injection in calves, at a dosage of 0.4 mg per kg of body weight.
  • Cattle, Pigs, and Dogs: May be used in these species for spasms of the GI or urinary tracts, sometimes in combination with an analgesic like metamizole -. can be IV or IM, depending on the species and specific product formulation.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Horses: Administered as a single dose of 0.3 mg/kg of body weight (typically 1.5 mL per 100 kg) exclusively by slow IV injection.
    • Caution: Intramuscular or subcutaneous (SC) use is generally not established or recommended for horses due to the risk of local reactions.
  • Cattle & Calves:
    • IV or IM: Can be given intravenously or intramuscularly.
    • Calves: Specifically recommended at 0.4 mg/kg (2 mL per 100 kg) via single IM injection as an aid in treating calf scour.
  • Sheep & Pigs:Administered via IV injection (0.7 mg/kg for sheep; 0.2–0.4 mg/kg for pigs). IM injection is only recommended if IV access is impossible.
  • Dogs:Administered via IV or IM injection at a dosage of approximately 0.1 mL per kg.
  • Injection Speed: Intravenous doses must be administered slowly to minimize the risk of anaphylactic shock or sudden drops in blood pressure.
