Imidocarb dipropionate is indicated for treatment and prevention of tick-borne parasitic diseases in dogs, cattle, horses, and sheep.
INDICATIONS
- Babesiosis (Redwater fever): This is the main indication across most species, including cattle, sheep, horses, and dogs. Imidocarb is highly effective against both large and small forms of the Babesia parasite.
- Anaplasmosis: Used for the treatment of Anaplasma infections in cattle and sheep.
- Ehrlichiosis: Used to treat Ehrlichia canis infections in dogs.
- Piroplasmosis in horses: It is the drug of choice for treating Babesia caballi and Theileria equi infections in horses.
- Hepatozoonosis in dogs (off-label)
- Cytauxzoonosis, babesiosis, and hemoplasmosis in cats (off-label)
ADMINISTRATION
- Administration Route: Imidocarb is administered through intramuscular (IM) or subcutaneous (SC) injection only, never intravenously, as this can be fatal.
- Dosage Regimen: The dosage and frequency depend heavily on the animal species, the specific parasite being treated, and whether it is for treatment or prevention.
- Dogs: For babesiosis, it is typically given in two doses, two weeks apart.
- Horses: For Babesia caballi, two doses are often given 24 hours apart, while the more resistant Theileria equi may require four to six doses over a longer interval.
- Cattle: A single dose is often effective for treatment, with higher doses providing a prophylactic effect against future infections for several weeks.
