Flukanide (Rafoxanide) is an anthelmintic medication administered to sheep, to control adult and immature flukes and nematodes.
INDICATIONS
- Liver Fluke (Fascioliasis): Rafoxanide is highly effective against both mature and developing immature stages of Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica (typically flukes that are 4 to 8 weeks old or older).
- Gastrointestinal Nematodes: It is used to control blood-sucking stomach and bowel worms, including species such as Haemonchus spp. (barber pole worm), Bunostomum spp., and Oesophagostomum spp..
- Nasal Bot Fly (Oestrus ovis): Rafoxanide is effective in the treatment of sheep infested with the larvae of the Oestrus ovis fly.
ADMINISTRATION
- Route: The product is a liquid suspension that must be shaken well before use and administered directly into the animal’s mouth as an undiluted drench using a proper dosing device (e.g., a drench gun).
- Dosage: The dosage is determined by the animal’s body weight, typically around 7.5 mg of rafoxanide per kg of body weight, but a veterinarian should be consulted for the specific dosage and treatment program. To ensure correct dosage, especially when treating groups of animals, all animals should be dosed at the rate corresponding to the heaviest one in the group.
- Treatment Timing: The timing of treatment depends on epidemiological factors and is customized for each farm. A repeat dose may be necessary after 4–6 weeks in cases of heavy liver fluke infestation to target maturing flukes.
