Strepto-penicillin Injection

Procaine Penicillin G + Streptomycin sulfate (strepto-penicillin) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in livestock and companion animals by synergistically combining Penicillin G and Streptomycin.

Strepto-penicillin, a combination antimicrobial injection containing Penicillin G and Dihydrostreptomycin, is indicated for the treatment of local and systemic infections in livestock and companion animals.

INDICATIONS

  • Respiratory Infections: Including bacterial pneumonia, shipping fever, bronchitis, tracheitis, and strangles (in horses).
  • Wound and Skin Infections: Treatment of infected wounds, foot rot, and soft tissue infections such as abscesses or pyoderma.
  • Systemic Infections: Septicemia, navel ill (in calves/foals), and joint-ill.
  • Urogenital & Alimentary Infections: Metritis (uterine infection), cystitis, nephritis, and enteritis (gastrointestinal infections).
  • Specific Diseases:
    • Swine Erysipelas: (Diamond skin disease) in pigs.
    • Mastitis: Treatment of udder infections in dairy animals.
    • Leptospirosis: Often treated with this combination in dogs and livestock.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Preparation: The vial should be warmed to room temperature and shaken thoroughly to ensure a uniform suspension. The injection site and the vial’s rubber stopper should be disinfected with 70% alcohol.
  • Injection site: The injection should be made into the fleshy part of a thick muscle, such as the rump, hip, or thigh region.
  • Technique: Pull back on the plunger slightly before injecting; if blood appears, withdraw the needle and select a new location. Inject the dose slowly, and do not inject more than 10 mL at one site, rotating injection sites for subsequent treatments.
  • Duration: Treatment typically continues for at least 48 hours after clinical signs have subsided, but generally should not exceed a few consecutive days (e.g., 3-7 days depending on the species and product label).
