Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) vaccine is indicated for prophylactic immunization of healthy cattle to prevent infection, control outbreaks, and build herd immunity.
INDICATIONS
- Preventative Protection: To protect healthy cattle from contracting Lumpy Skin Disease.
- Outbreak Control: Used in mass vaccination campaigns to contain and control spreading LSD outbreaks.
- Annual Boosters: Required yearly to maintain immunity, often done in spring before insect seasons.
Vaccination Schedule & Guidelines
- Healthy Animals: Only vaccinate cattle that are free from clinical signs of LSD.
- Calves: First dose at 4-6 months, or younger if dams are unvaccinated; check maternal antibody status.
- New Animals: Vaccinate at least 28 days before introducing them to the herd.
- Transport: Vaccinate 28 days before moving cattle to new locations.
ADMINISTRATION
- Shake the bottle again before filling the syringe.
- Administer the vaccine subcutaneously.
- Inject the 2ml dose into the pre-scapular region (the area just behind the shoulder).
- Administer to animals of all ages above 3 months old.
- It is recommended to vaccinate all animals in the spring, and for calves born from vaccinated cows, from 4-6 months of age.
- Avoid vaccinating unhealthy animals.
- If anaphylactic reactions occur, seek immediate veterinary care and administer adrenaline.
Post-vaccination
- The vaccine is a live-attenuated marker vaccine, meaning it helps distinguish between vaccinated and naturally infected animals.
- Avoid contact between vaccinated cattle and sheep for at least three weeks.
- Destroy any unused vaccine, containers, and vaccination equipment according to local regulations.
- The vaccine is designed for a single dose for cattle and buffaloes above 3 months of age.
