Pirsue Intramammary Solution

Zoetis Pirsue Intramammary Solution (Pirlimycin) is an antibiotic used exclusively in lactating dairy cows for the treatment of clinical and subclinical mastitis caused by specific Gram-positive bacteria. It is administered by direct infusion into the affected quarter of the udder.

Pirlimycin intramammary solution is indicated for the treatment of clinical and subclinical mastitis in lactating dairy cows.

INDICATIONS

Pirlimycin is effective against specific bacterial species that cause mastitis, including:

  • Staphylococcus aureus (both penicillinase-positive and negative strains)
  • Streptococcus agalactiae
  • Streptococcus dysgalactiae
  • Streptococcus uberis
  • Coagulase-negative staphylococci

ADMINISTRATION

The solution is administered via intramammary infusion, a procedure that requires strict hygiene to prevent the introduction of new infections.
  1. Preparation: The udder must be milked out completely. The teats should be washed thoroughly with warm water and a suitable dairy antiseptic, then dried. An alcohol pad (often provided with the product) is used to wipe the end of the affected teat until no more dirt appears on the swab.
  2. Infusion:
    • The white end cap of the single-dose syringe is removed.
    • The cannula tip is gently inserted into the teat canal (either a full or partial insertion method can be used).
    • The entire contents are carefully and slowly dispensed into the gland by pushing the plunger with continuous pressure.
    • The quarter is then gently massaged to help distribute the medication into the milk cistern.
  3. Post-Infusion: Following the infusion, all teats should be dipped with an effective disinfectant teat dip.

DOSAGE

The typical dosage involves infusing one full syringe (50 mg of pirlimycin) into each affected quarter.
  • For clinical mastitis associated with Staphylococcus aureus or subclinical mastitis, treatment may be a one-time repeat after 24 hours.
  • For an extended duration of therapy for subclinical mastitis in some cases, treatment can be repeated at 24-hour intervals for up to eight consecutive days.
