Spiramycin

Spiramycin tablets are indicated for the treatment of bacterial and Mycoplasmal infections in animals.

Oral and Periodontal Infections: Formulated with metronidazole to treat multi-bacterial oral conditions including:
- Gingivitis and stomatitis.
- Periodontitis and dental abscesses.
- Glossitis (tongue inflammation) and tonsillitis.
- Dental fistulas and oral cavity wounds.
Respiratory Tract Infections: It is used for upper respiratory tract infections, bronchopneumonia, and sinusitis in various species.
Mycoplasmal Infections: Effective against Mycoplasma spp., which often cause respiratory disease in cats and poultry.

Species-Specific Indications

Dogs and Cats: Primarily for the oral conditions listed above and adjunct treatment for mechanical or surgical periodontal therapy.
Poultry and Birds: Often combined with doxycycline to treat Ornithosis complex and other respiratory/mycoplasmal infections.
Livestock (Cattle and Swine): Used for mastitis, metritis (uterine infection), arthritis, foot-rot, and respiratory diseases.
Specific Pathogens: Indicated for infections caused by susceptible Gram-positive bacteria, anaerobes, and certain protozoa such as Toxoplasma gondii and Cryptosporidium.

Determine the Correct Dosage: The correct dose is crucial and is based on the animal’s body weight and the severity of the condition.
Choose the Method:
- Direct Administration: Place the tablet deep in the back of the mouth (on the base of the tongue) to encourage swallowing.
- With Food: Hide the tablet in a small amount of food or a “pill pocket” to ensure the animal consumes the entire dose.
Ensure Consumption: Observe the animal to confirm the entire tablet has been swallowed and not spat out.
Dosing Frequency and Duration: Dosing is typically once or twice daily for a course of 5 to 10 days. Complete full course to prevent relapse.
Tablet Division (if necessary): If accurate dosing requires dividing the tablet, many veterinary spiramycin tablets are scored.
- Place the tablet on a flat surface with the scored side up.
- To break into halves or quarters, press down firmly with your thumbs in the middle or on both sides as appropriate for the score line.
- Divided tablets have a limited shelf life (e.g., 3 days). .
