INDICATIONS

  • Respiratory Tract Infections: Such as pneumonia and bronchitis.
  • Septicemia: Severe systemic or bloodborne bacterial infections.
  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Including cystitis and pyelonephritis.
  • Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Such as abscesses, cellulitis, and wound infections.
  • Bone and Joint Infections: Including osteomyelitis and septic arthritis.
  • Reproductive Infections: Specifically mastitis and metritis (uterine infections) in livestock.
  • Surgical Prophylaxis: Administered before surgery to prevent post-operative infections.
  • Neurological Infections: Can be used to treat meningitis due to its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Intravenous (IV): Preferred for severe infections, usually administered over 30–60 minutes to minimize risks.
  • Intramuscular (IM): Injected deep into a large muscle, such as the gluteal muscle (buttock) or thigh, often used for smaller doses or when IV access is not feasible.
  • Reconstitution: The powder is mixed with sterile water, normal saline, or dextrose solutions before use.
  • Safety Warning: Ceftriaxone should never be mixed with or administered simultaneously with calcium-containing IV solutions.
