TRONATE-CV Injection

TRONATE-CV (ticarcillin & clavulanic acid) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used for the treatment of bacterial infections, particularly those caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and other bacteria resistant to standard penicillins. Often used as a potent, off-label treatment for horses and dogs. A WOAH Veterinary Medicine.

TRONATE-CV Injection (ticarcillin and clavulanic acid) is indicated for the treatment of bacterial infections in horses and dogs.

INDICATIONS

  • Intrauterine Infections (Mares): Used for treatment of endometritis in horses, especially infections caused by β-hemolytic streptococci.
  • Severe Systemic Infections: The combination is used to treat serious infections in various animals, including pneumonia, bone infections (osteomyelitis), and soft tissue infections.
  • Topical Ear Infections (Dogs): A compounded ticarcillin-clavulanic acid solution (often under the brand name Timentin) is used topically to treat Pseudomonas otitis (ear infections), which are frequently resistant to other antibiotics.
  • Mixed Infections: Because of its broad spectrum of activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, it is particularly useful for mixed infections or for initial therapy before the specific causative organism is identified.

ADMINISTRATION (Subcutaneous)

  1. Restraint & Prep: Secure the animal and clip hair at the injection site (often the neck or ribs).
  2. Tenting the Skin: Gently lift a fold of skin to create a “tent”.
  3. Needle Insertion: Insert a short needle (0.5-1 inch) at a 45-degree angle into the base of the tent, parallel to the skin.
  4. Aspirate: Pull back slightly on the plunger; if blood appears, the needle is in a blood vessel, and you must reposition.
  5. Inject: Slowly push the plunger to inject the medication.
Intramuscular (IM)
  1. Site Selection: Deep into a large muscle, using a long enough needle to reach it.
  2. Aspirate: Check for blood as with SQ injections.
  3. Inject: Slowly depress the plunger, then remove the needle.
