Virbac Zoletil is an anesthetic and sedative used in dogs and cats for restraint during diagnostic and short-term surgical procedures.

INDICATIONS

  • Restraint and Sedation: Managing fractious or aggressive animals for clinical handling.
  • Minor Procedures of Short Duration: Typically procedures lasting approximately 30 minutes that require mild to moderate analgesia.
    • Examples: Laceration repair, draining of abscesses, castrations, dentistry, and foreign body removal.
  • Induction of General Anesthesia: Administered intravenously in dogs to induce anesthesia before maintaining it with an inhalant anesthetic.
  • Major Procedures (specifically in cats): Recommended for procedures such as ovariohysterectomy (spaying) and onychectomy (declawing).
  • Broad Species Use: Beyond domestic pets, it is used for immobilising and anesthetising various wildlife and zoo animals, including deer, goats, felids (e.g., lions, tigers), and canids. 

ADMINISTRATION

  • Administration Routes:
    • Dogs: Intravenous (IV) or Intramuscular (IM) injection.
    • Cats: Intramuscular (IM) injection only, generally deep.
  • Administration Guidelines:
    • Dogs (IM): Used for diagnostics or minor procedures, with specific mg/lb ranges recommended in product literature.
    • Dogs (IV): Administered slowly over a period of 30–45 seconds.
    • Cats (IM): Onset of action typically occurs within 5-12 minutes.
  • Administration Notes:
    • Reconstitution: Supplied as a powder to be reconstituted with a diluent.
    • Recovery: The recovery period is progressive and can take 2–6 hours, with analgesia lasting longer than surgical anesthesia.
    • Safety: Maximum dosage limits, such as not exceeding 12 mg/lb (26.4 mg/kg) in dogs, should be strictly followed to avoid overdosage.
