• Dogs: Acyclovir is occasionally used to treat Canine Herpesvirus-1 (CHV-1) infections in puppies. It has good oral bioavailability in dogs at lower doses, but indications and appropriate doses have not been definitively established, and higher doses may cause a decline in absorption.
• Horses: The drug is used in the treatment and prevention of Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM), a neurological disease caused by EHV-1. Oral bioavailability in horses is poor and inconsistent, so high, frequent doses or intravenous administration may be needed to achieve effective concentrations. A related prodrug, valacyclovir, is sometimes used preferentially in horses due to improved bioavailability.
• Birds: Acyclovir has been studied and used to treat certain herpesvirus conditions, such as Marek’s disease and poxvirus in canaries. Oral administration via gavage was found to be efficacious in one study on Quaker parakeets.
• Cats: Systemic (oral) acyclovir is not recommended for cats due to poor bioavailability and a high risk of significant toxicity, including bone marrow suppression and kidney/liver problems. 

ADMINISTRATION

• Oral Ingestion Only: The tablets are intended to be swallowed whole.
• With or Without Food: The medication can be given on an empty stomach or mixed with food. If your pet experiences vomiting when dosed on an empty stomach, try giving the next dose with a small amount of food or a treat.
• Follow Directions Closely: Always follow your veterinarian’s specific instructions regarding dosage and treatment duration.
• Ensure Hydration: Make sure your pet drinks plenty of water while taking this medicine to help maintain proper kidney function
