Acyclovir tablets are an antiviral medication indicated for treatment of herpesvirus infections in horses, dogs, and birds. Not recommended for use in cats.
INDICATIONS
- Horses: Used to treat and prevent Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy, and pulmonary diseases associated with EHV-1. Also used to reduce fever in exposed horses to prevent neurologic signs.
- Dogs: Occasionally used for Canine Herpesvirus-1 (CHV-1) infections in puppies and as a prophylaxis for Canine Parvovirus, although definitive efficacy is still being established.
- Birds: Indicated for the treatment of Pacheco’s Disease (a herpesvirus infection in parrots). Also used to treat certain herpesvirus conditions, such as Marek’s disease and poxvirus in canaries.
ADMINISTRATION
- Oral Ingestion Only: The tablets are intended to be swallowed whole.
- With or Without Food: The medication can be given on an empty stomach or mixed with food. If your pet experiences vomiting when dosed on an empty stomach, try giving the next dose with a small amount of food or a treat.
- Follow Directions Closely: Always follow your veterinarian’s specific instructions regarding dosage and treatment duration.
- Ensure Hydration: Make sure your pet drinks plenty of water while taking this medicine to help maintain proper kidney function
