Amoxicillin Oral Suspension

Amoxicillin oral suspension is a broad-spectrum prescription antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in dogs and cats, including urinary, respiratory, teeth, and skin. A WVA Veterinary Medicine.

Amoxicillin oral suspension is indicated for a wide variety of common bacterial infections in dogs and cats.

INDICATIONS

  • Respiratory Tract Infections: Such as tonsillitis and tracheobronchitis.
  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Including bladder infections (cystitis).
  • Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: This includes wounds, lacerations, abscesses, and bacterial dermatitis.
  • Gastrointestinal Tract Infections: Used for bacterial gastroenteritis caused by susceptible bacteria.
  • Dental Infections: Such as tooth abscesses.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Dosing: The exact dosage (typically 5 mg per pound of body weight for dogs, or 50 mg total for cats) and frequency (usually once or twice daily) are determined based on the animal’s weight and the type/severity of the infection.
  • Method: The liquid is measured with a provided oral syringe and administered into the pet’s mouth, often into the cheek pocket. It can be given with or without food, though giving it with a small meal may reduce gastrointestinal upset.
  • Duration: The full course of treatment must be completed as prescribed, even if the pet appears to feel better sooner, to prevent the infection from recurring and to avoid developing antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
