OBP Asiatic Redwater Vaccine

OBP Asiatic Redwater is a live, attenuated vaccine used in calves (2-8 months old) to induce immunity against the Redwater parasite. Requires special handling, and must be kept deep-frozen on dry ice until immediately before use. A WVA Veterinary Medicine.

OBP Asiatic Redwater Vaccine (for Babesia bovis) is indicated for preventing severe babesiosis (Redwater) in cattle.

INDICATIONS

  • Target Species: The vaccine is specifically for use in cattle.
  • Disease Prevention: It is used to protect cattle from the clinical disease and potentially fatal effects of Asiatic redwater, which is transmitted by the larval stage of the Rhipicephalus microplus (Asiatic blue tick).
  • Geographic Areas: Vaccination is recommended in areas where the disease is endemic or in animals being moved from a redwater-free area to an endemic area.
  • Vaccination Age: Calves should typically be vaccinated between three and eight months of age. Calves younger than two months may have maternal antibodies that interfere with the vaccine’s effectiveness.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Route: The vaccine is administered as an intramuscular injection. A suitable injection site is typically in the neck area, in front of the shoulder blade.
  • Storage: This vaccine is a frozen product containing Babesia bovis-infective bovine blood and requires storage at temperatures below -70°C, such as in dry ice or liquid nitrogen.
  • Handling:
    • To prepare for use, the vaccine must be thawed slowly, for instance, by placing it on melting ice.
    • After thawing, it should be used within a maximum of 4 hours.
    • Thawed vaccine cannot be refrozen for later use, and any unused product must be discarded properly.
    • Sterile syringes and needles should be used for administration, and utilizing a separate needle for each animal is recommended to prevent contamination or disease transmission.
  • Vaccination Timing and Monitoring:
    • Vaccinating calves between 4 to 8 months of age is often associated with good immunity and potentially fewer severe reactions.
    • Animals, particularly older ones, should be monitored closely for post-vaccination reactions, such as fever, which typically occur 10 to 14 days after injection for Asiatic redwater. If reactions occur, animals may require immediate treatment with an appropriate medication.
