MSD Botuvax Vaccine

MSD's Botuvax vaccine is used for the active immunization of cattle, horses, sheep, and goats against botulism. Botulism in animals is caused by toxins produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, often ingested when animals eat decomposing carcasses or bones. Helps protect them by stimulating an immune response to these toxins.

Botulism vaccine is indicated for healthy animals at risk of Clostridium botulinum Type B infection, common in areas with baled hay, dead animals, or contaminated feed.

INDICATIONS

  • Purpose: To prevent botulism by using formalinized.
  • Regimen: Animals not previously immunized require two injections 4 to 6 weeks apart, followed by an annual booster.
  • Important Note: The vaccine does not substitute for supplementary feeding of phosphorus, which is a preventative measure against animals seeking out bone-rich carcasses.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Route: Subcutaneous injection is the standard route, though some related products might be intramuscular.
  • Aseptic Technique: Use clean and sterile needles and syringes for each individual animal to prevent contamination.
  • Preparation: The vaccine is a liquid with an off-white precipitate and must be shaken well before use to ensure the contents are properly mixed.
  • Storage: Store the vaccine in a refrigerator between 2 °C and 8 °C (35 °F and 46 °F). Do not freeze it, as this can destroy the vaccine’s effectiveness.
  • Withdrawal Period: Animals should not be slaughtered for human consumption within 21 days of vaccination.
