Buserelin Acetate Injection

Buserelin Acetate, a synthetic analogue of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), is used to treat a variety of reproductive disorders, and to optimize breeding programs in cattle, horses, rabbits, and pigs. A WVA Veterinary Medicine.

Buserelin Acetate injection is a synthetic gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analog used in cattle, horses, rabbits, and pigs for reproductive management, and treatment of ovarian disorders.

INDICATIONS

  • Induction of Ovulation: It is commonly used to induce ovulation (release of eggs from the ovary) in mares and rabbits, allowing for more accurate timing of mating or artificial insemination (AI).
  • Ovarian Disorders: It is indicated for the treatment of ovarian disorders, specifically follicular cysts, which can cause irregular estrus cycles or nymphomania in cattle.
  • Improved Conception/Pregnancy Rates: Administration at the time of AI, or several days afterward during the luteal phase, can improve overall conception and pregnancy rates in cows and mares.
  • Estrus Synchronization: In conjunction with other hormones like prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) analogues, it is used to synchronize the estrus (heat) cycles of groups of livestock, facilitating fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) programs and scheduled breeding.
  • Postpartum Fertility: It can be used to induce an early postpartum estrus cycle and improve fertility in the period after calving.
  • Increased Litter Size: In gilts (young female pigs), its use has been shown to improve farrowing outcomes, specifically leading to a potential increase in the number of total piglets born.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Cattle, Horses, and Rabbits: The intramuscular route is generally preferred, but it can also be administered subcutaneously or intravenously.
  • Pigs: The intramuscular route is the preferred method.
  • Fish (Trout): A single dose is administered per kg bodyweight to facilitate spawning.
  • Aseptic Technique: Aseptic precautions must be observed during administration to prevent infection.
  • Dosage: The dosage and timing are dependent on the species and the specific condition being treated (e.g., ovarian cysts, induction of ovulation, improvement of conception rate). A veterinarian determines the appropriate dose and schedule.
