Cefquinome Injection

Cefquinome is a cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in cattle, pigs, and sometimes horses. It is a prescription drug administered via intramuscular (IM) or subcutaneous (SC) injection. Used in the treatment of respiratory infection, acute bacterial otitis media, bacterial septicamia, and intra-abdominal infection.

Cefquinome injection is indicated for treating specific bacterial infections in cattle, calves, horses and pigs.

INDICATIONS

  • Cattle: Respiratory diseases (such as those caused by Pasteurella multocida and Mannheimia haemolytica), digital dermatitis, foot rot, and acute E. coli mastitis with systemic signs.
  • Calves: E. coli septicaemia.
  • Pigs: Bacterial infections of the lungs and respiratory tract, and Mastitis-metritis-agalactia (MMA) syndrome caused by sensitive bacteria.
  • Piglets: Reduction of mortality in Streptococcus suis meningitis cases, arthritis caused by Streptococcus spp. or E. coli, and mild to moderate epidermitis caused by Staphylococcus hyicus.
  • Horses/Foals (in some regions): Respiratory diseases caused by Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus and severe bacterial infections with high risk of septicaemia where E. coli is involved.
  • Dogs and Cats (in some regions): Various infections, including skin diseases, mastitis, meningitis, arthritis, cystitis, urethritis, and respiratory diseases caused by sensitive microorganisms.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Route: Cefquinome is generally administered via intramuscular injection, but subcutaneous injection is also a common method depending on the formulation and the veterinarian’s discretion. In some cases (e.g., in horses), it may be administered intravenously.
  • Aseptic Technique: The injection site should be clean, and a sterile needle and syringe must be used. Swabbing the skin with an antiseptic is recommended before injection.
  • Dosing Schedule: Treatment typically involves a daily injection for a period of 3 to 5 days. Dosing and duration depend on the animal’s weight, the severity of the infection, and the specific condition being treated
