Detomidine Injection

Detomidine is a sedative and analgesic that provides sedation, and both superficial and visceral analgesia in horses and cattle. Used to facilitate examinations, and  minor surgical, diagnostic, and husbandry procedures. A WVA Veterinary Medicine.

INDICATIONS

Detomidine provides sedation. and both superficial and visceral analgesia (pain relief). It is used to facilitate: 

  • Physical examinations and the handling of fractious (unruly) animals.
  • Diagnostic procedures, including:
    • Rectal and reproductive tract examinations.
    • Bronchoscopy and bronchoalveolar lavage.
    • Nasogastric intubation.
    • Radiography (X-rays).
    • Relief from abdominal pain (colic), though a full diagnostic workup is still necessary to determine the cause.
  • Minor surgical procedures, often in conjunction with a local anesthetic:
    • Suturing of skin lacerations/wounds.
    • Castrations.
    • Dental procedures (e.g., tooth rasping, floating).
    • Treatment of teats or skin tumors.
  • Premedication prior to the administration of anesthetics to achieve a smoother induction.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Intravenous (IV) injection has a rapid onset of effect (2-4 minutes).
  • Intramuscular (IM) injection takes slightly longer to reach full effect (3-5 minutes) but provides a similar quality of sedation.
  • The dosage (typically 10-40 mcg/kg) is determined based on the desired depth and duration of sedation and analgesia.
  • The effects can last from 30 minutes to several hours depending on the dose and route of administration.
